The mission of the Samburu County’s department of gender, culture and social services is to formulate, mainstream and implement responsive polices through coordinated strategies for sustained social-economic development of the county and empowerment of vulnerable and marginalized groups. The Samburu county government has forged sustainable partnerships with the key stakeholders at home and beyond on organizational and communal levels towards realizing the mission, objectives and the vision of this department. Since devolution, the department has put in place structures in order to promote development of recreation facilities in the county, sporting activities among the youth and boost development of talent.
The department also managed to distribute food stuffs to elderly persons and people living with disability who are kept in children homes. This is in efforts geared towards mainstreaming disability through the integration of people living with disabilities in the society by empowering them with enabling devices and IGA skills. Among other projects for the People living with disabilities that the department achieved were The Drafting of the disabled person’s bill 2014, The Annual marketing of the international women day for PLWD and the formation of a body in charge of the disabled. The department has also strived to promote culture through forums such as the world famous Maralal International Camel Derby and the establishment of projects that seek to visualize the diversity of the social scene of the Samburu County. The concept of the cultural Manyattas or villages is one of such projects.
